Panini Peek: 2011-12 Limited Hockey

October 3, 2011

Pardon the mixed metaphor here, but it’s safe to say that 2011-12 Limited Hockey will pack quite a wallop batting cleanup in the 2011-12 Panini America hockey lineup. To be sure, the higher-end offering will deliver some unique new twists (including pieces of game-used hockey pucks and nets) when it releases December 14.

Each box will deliver three autograph or memorabilia cards and four additional cards from an impressive list of base cards, parallels, inserts and the new High Numbers.

High Numbers this year will focus on the NHL’s top goalies and will be limited to just 99 copies. But the real stars of the show in terms of Limited’s new additions are the new-look Phenoms RCs injected with unique, definable patches, Net Presence Memorabilia cards featuring jumbo pieces of twine used during the 2011 NHL All-Star Game and the Game Pucks insert that includes pieces of pucks used during NHL games.

Here’s just the short list of Limited attributes that will cater to discriminating hockey collectors:

  • Base Phenoms RCs will be signed on-card and will include team logo patches. (Silver Spotlights parallels feature each team’s secondary logo, Gold Spotlights feature either a commemorative draft year patch or an NHLPA patch and Platinum Spotlights feature an NHL patch.)
  • Rookie Class Letters/Numbers Signatures feature signed jersey swatches cut straight off the backs of the game’s top prospects.
  • The Brothers in Arms insert includes memorabilia from the NHL’s top goaltending tandems, with Patch variations limited to 25 copies or less.
  • The return of 1/1 NHL Shields, 1/1 Limited Cut Signatures and  1/1 Manufacturer’s Marks.
  • Jumbos and Freshmen Jumbos delivering wild, oversized swatches and autographs from top rookies and the game’s hottest stars.
  • Several on-card autograph sets, including Select Signatures, Back To The Future Signatures and Men of Mayhem Signatures.

2011-12 Limited delivers a 175-card base set with base RCs numbered to 299. Each 15-box case of the product will yield six Phenoms, one Phenoms Silver, three Jumbos, one Men of Mayhem Signature, two Brothers in Arms Memorabilia, two Crease Cleaners, one Net Presence Memorabilia, one High Number, four Team Trademarks, one Limited Trios and four Banner Seasons.

Looks pretty sweet. New season starts in less than a week and new card sets are coming soon after that. What could make for a better fall season?

Look great! I like how they all seem to blend together. I Like how each piece of the dark/gray design of the card seems to be a part of every card and not just the base. They really stand out this way.

Looks great. I’d be a little more excited if I wasn’t still waiting on redemptions from last years product though…

Will the Base Phenoms RCs actually be signed on-card? Looking at the photos included, it appears that the Phenoms insert is done on your standard embroidered manufactured patch material. That doesn’t offer an on-card autograph.

Anyways, the rest of the product looks great.

    Tracy,
I really think this is one of the most underrated brands of the year in both hockey and football. Outstanding work again.
Will they ever release a hockey version of Panini Threads with Rookie Lettermans like in football?
Finally, any new autos lined up from veterans that are unique and we don’t get much this year.
I really can’t wait for the 2011-12 hockey season now that you have one year under your belt.
    Thanks,
    T

It would be nice if they would fulfull their redemptions from last years set first. Been waiting for 9 months now on some of these cards. Customer service is not answering calls, returning voicemail or responding on panini redemption website.
