Collectors’ Choice: You Make the Call for a Special Insert in 2011-12 Hoops Basketball

April 21, 2011

How’s this for an idea: We here at Panini America are turning the product development reigns over to our loyal collectors. Yes, that would be you.

Over the course of the next month, The Knight’s Lance will be your personal drawing board as you determine the theme, name, checklist and design for a special 20-card insert that will appear in the triumphant late-September return of 2011-12 Hoops Basketball.

After all, who’s more qualified to help us build a better insert set than the very people who so loyally support us all season long? Well, aside from the basketball guys in this building, no one. So, here’s your chance to have a direct impact on the trading card industry; that unique opportunity to help create an NBA-licensed trading card insert — and then collect it.

But first things first, we need you to vote on what the subject matter of this collector-selected insert before we can have you choose the name of it, the 20 players who’ll appear in it, the design . . .

We’ll give collectors a week to vote on the theme and then we’ll proceed with the next vote.

This should be a lot of fun.

I’m really looking forwards to the revival of ‘Hoops’, and this is a great idea. Although, I do have a feeling I’ll be alone in voting for “Top Defenders”.

    Great idea!! looking forward!!

I like the Dunkers idea, but it’s gotta be the mascots! I can see players dunk any day. Bring on the Gorilla, Bango, Mavsman and the rest!

“International Players” should be an option!

    • April 21, 2011 7:07 pm

Great idea. Be sure to add that as your “others” vote.

If Rivals mean different kinds of Dual Autos….

    Magic / Bird
any celtic / any laker (first octo AUTO??)
    Bird / Thomas
    Hakeem / Robinson
    Dirk / Nash
Kobe / Pierce (i know he signed)
Bosh / Gasol (since lebron nor wade is here)

and just for giggles (Nash / Horry) who doesn’t want that dual auto…

VOTE FOR Great Rivalries…not just Dunkers…

      I vote for Unsung Heroes.
So much could be done with that set to include some of the players who make the game what it is without being a superstar. You could have the players personal accomplishments listed on the back. You could also have a logoman series for unsung heroes as many of these players havent had logoman style cards or even prime patch cards. Unsung really just means not the typical 10 A+ players.

another idea would be “20 most bizarre moments from the NBA” in its history with little known interesting factoids.

  6. April 21, 2011 7:42 pm

My vote goes to Other as ” Record holders active and Inactive”. Could have league record holders franchise record holders etc..

  7. April 21, 2011 8:15 pm

I would like to see insert cards with top number 1 draftees active and inactive.

a set themed around international players and the countries they are from would be a cool idea

I voted but the theme isn’t important to me, as long as Charles Barkley (auto) will be an option as one of the players.

I really do like the idea of International Players. The NBA has grown so much over the last 20 years with an international movement. The trading card industry I think should give a shout out to their collectors overseas for being so loyal and buying their products. I would love to see in this subset portions of their Olympic jerseys or maybe even manufactured patches of the player’s home country with an on-card auto. It would look incredible. Keep it up Panini, way to get the collector involved.

Also, the name of the set could be called “Passport to the Pros”. Just another idea.

Guys, most of the single-game records are one better than the second-most (notable exception of Wilt Chamberlain points). Might want to look elsewhere

Hoops were always a cheap brand with the odd rare and valuable insert. They introduced ‘Starting Five’ with the biggest star in the main pic and the rest of the starters in smaller pics. Then they were an extremely low serial numbered parallel.
How about the next step – Starting Five Autographs – I know it might not be possible due to licences etc but it would be awesome to have the 5 starters on each team having signed the one card.

I would like to see a “Rejected” set – top blocks action shot card. On the card should be the date of the game.

  14. April 22, 2011 5:19 am

I came up with these ideas.

Benchwarmers: An action shot of the bench either before a big play or after a big play just to see their reaction..regardless if a star is in there or not

Lockerroom: An insert set of 20 star players lockers before or after a game with an on card auto maybe

View From the Heavens: Some how get a shot from the score board mid court looking down showing the full length of the court and all the action…then what you do is take that shot and transfer it on to clear acetate…THEN make the card a full lenghtish game used floor (think extra exquisite jersey) and then put the acetate of the action over the top of!! BOOM!

Tattoos: Nearly every player has tattoos…why not make an insert set of the superstars tattoos.

Triple Logoman: Ive mentioned this before on various forums…have a triple logoman card of one player but get the logo from the jersey the shorts and the socks…that would be epic…make one of pippen but dont put it into packs…just send it straight to me!

I’ve always liked the “Legends” becaused these are the guys that have paved the way to the game called basketball and they are an inspiration and idol to the rookies entering the game.

I put my vote in for “Sexy Dudes of the Court”
This insert set is long overdue. I hope they go with this idea and include the back of Many Ginobili’s head as it’s own card.

If you are going to do a set based on the old one, you have to include coaches! The insert could be coaches with their star players and include only coaches who have won a title or Coach of the Year and have jersey/tie parallels (contact me if you need some cool names for this set). Every coach would get a base card, just like they did in the good ol’ days? Might we see a second series too? 🙂

I think celebrity fans would be a cool insert set with auto’s of Jack Nicholson, Spike Lee and others. A little something different besides players. I know I would love to have an auto of them. Just an idea.

Record Setters: Not single game records per-se, just records about a lot of things. Like for example Deron Williams setting a NBA record recently for the most assists over a 4-game stretch when joining a new team.

Definitely need the Fans of the Game set for basketball

You could do a set of Three Point Shooters and have it be Long Distance Dialers or Dialing from a Distance or something. Have Majerle, Dale Ellis, Hornacek, Ray Allen, Reggie Miller

    Hustle Men/Energy Guys

Slam Dunk Winners (sans Jordan) with shots of their winning dunks (Dwight’s Superman, VC’s Cookie Jar)

Some sort of not quite good enough to win a championship set…Ewing, Karl Malone, Stockton, Barkley

Lost in Transition (college stars who didn’t pan out/live up to hype in the NBA) – O’Bannon, Juan Dixon, Laettner

I’d also love to see some sort of set that consists of 5 of the best players from each state/country all on one card, maybe by position since it won’t be easy in places like NY, CA

    how about these

Walking Technicals : most technical fouls in a season

    Crazy Hairs: crazy hairstyles

From long range: Buzzer beaters from far away to tie or win a game.( with a picture from the side of the court where you can see the difference to the basket, like Rasheed Wallace vs Nuggets on 03/26/07)

Tag Cards: IMO the nicest cards would be with a complete tag of the players Jersey.Must be a 1/1 set then.and must have Rasheed Wallace in it 😉

Most Underrated Players that won a championship: like the title says, underrated Players which helped a Team winning a title.

Best trades: The greatest Trades in the League.
