Panini Peek: Fun, Affordability at the Heart of 2012 Triple Play Baseball (Gallery)

April 19, 2012

Panini America will take the term “bang for a buck” to collectible new heights in July with the triumphant return of Triple Play Baseball to the hobby for the first time since 1994. The fun-for-all-ages 2012 Triple Play Baseball promises a truly unique pack-popping experience that places premiums on collectibility, affordability, education and — above all else — fun.

Not bad for just 99 cents a pack.

From the entertaining illustrations adorning every base card to the peel-and-stick practicality of the set’s Eye Black insert, there’s a little something in 2012 Triple Play Baseball for everyone, whether you’re a kid, a kid at heart or a hardcore collector looking for a refreshingly enjoyable experience.

Here, see what we mean by perusing the set’s highlights:

  • Focus — One player from each team will be featured on Focus cards that provide a closer look at the player’s eyes. Even in illustrated form, the intensity of the game is undeniable.
  • Eye Black — Used by the pros, these Eye Blacks are the real deal and can be peeled off and used by collectors in their little league games or in their backyards.
  • Baseball 101 — From the pitcher’s mound to home runs, the cards in this educational insert break down and explain the finer points of the game.
  • Hall of Fame — Featuring a short list of first-ballot inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame, these legendary cards will give young collectors a whole new appreciation for baseball’s history.
  • Real Feel — Featuring an authentic piece of equipment used in a big-league game, these cards will allow collectors to feel the material and learn about the process of creating these tools of the trade.
  • Base Set — 90 of today’s greatest players are presented as never before with highly-stylized, illustrated cards that are way cool. Each card back features a trivia question and answer about the featured player on the front.
  • Box Break — Each 24-pack box will deliver 24 Stickers, 48 Puzzle cards, 12 Focus, six Temp Tattoos, two When I Was a Kid, two Hall of Fame and one Real Feel.

I opened an astonishing amount of the 1992 Triple Play, that orange hue haunted my dreams for years. Great job putting out a product that is affordable, entertaining and true to the hobby’s most basic principles. Thanks Tracy!

These are great; I love the stylized/cartoony look.

Ryan Howard looks a little like a football player.

Interesting. I could see kids buying them for the eye black alone.

LOL! Love this! This is a great idea to get the kids interested in baseball cards again. I think the “Eye Black” inserts are GREAT! Am I reading it right that there will be 24 of the Eye Black cards per box? My son will love it!!

    First, eye black is genius.

Second, I remember collecting Triple Play in 1994 and still have a ton of those cards. It’s pretty cool to see that brand make a comeback despite it being set up a little differently. But it’s definitely one of those products kids will love.

This may be the most original idea for a trading card to come down the pike in years. But only a 90-card base set? That’s it?

And one other thing, where’s the player’s name on the Reel Feel bat card?

I really like the Eye Black idea. Seems like a theme in these comments. Kids will love that. Might have to get myself a set. I like the cartoon look of the base cards. Might even break my daughter into the card collector world.

Showed my son the previews and he thought the cards were cool. He liked Black Beard. I know he will want to try and draw them also. As long as the local shops keep them at $0.99, then i could see us buying quite a few packs – maybe it will be his 1st attemp to build a set.

CORRECTION: There are four Eye Black cards per box. But there are 24 normal sticker cards per box. Sorry for the confusion.

Just awesome. When I was a kid I collected Triple Play for the hologram nicknames cards. The set name brings back memories. I have moved on to hockey collecting now and have not bought any other sport, but you know what, I will be buying a box/two/however much to get the set. It is pretty uncommon that a set is so fun that it makes collectors cross sport lines.

    Do this for hockey, please.

Do you plan on putting like rated rookie kind of symbol for the rookies like Yu Darvish?

Why can’t we see the picture of Miguel Montero? He is my favorite outfielder!
