Panini America 2012-13 Brilliance Basketball Preview (1)

Panini America officials raised more than a few eyebrows when they announced in early March the addition of 2012-13 Brilliance Basketball to the NBA product roster. But for the product itself, they raised a lot more than than that.

By incorporating some good, old-fashioned embossing, mirror board stock and intricate design and type treatments, Panini America’s creative folks delivered a set with differences that you can see and feel. As a result, perhaps the true brilliance of Brilliance is not so much the set’s autograph and memorabilia content (which is quite stellar) as it is the raised-relief effect that shines on every card.

It’s an effect that must be witnessed firsthand to be truly appreciated, but after spending some quality time this morning with some early preview cards and a few shiny uncut sheets, we think the following images will give you a unique perspective regarding exactly what to expect. Personally, I’m a big fan of the way the Springfield insert came out, but here’s betting you’ll find something to admire in the Spellbound, Team Tomorrow, Magic Numbers and Scorer’s Inc. offerings, too.

Take a look and let us know what you think. And stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance for additional coverage of 2012-13 Brilliance Basketball in the coming days.

Honestly, I’m a little torn – the base stock is beautiful, embossing is always appreciated and the Magic Numbers is well-balanced and looks good. On the negative side, the brand logo is waaaay too large and dominates the bottom half of the cards, making the photos above look crowded, especially on the Springfield and somewhat on the Accolades. I’ll probably crack a box just to see these beauties in hand and then move them on the secondary market (which is what I did with the impressive-but-daunting Marquee release). I would love to see Brilliance in the Hockey lineup with a few tweaks!
