Short Story: Panini America Begins Leaking 2013 Contenders Football SP Quantities
It’s a phenomenon that takes place every year at about this time. Almost immediately following the release of a new year of Contenders Football, the annual frenzy commences as collectors across North America begin scrambling and scouring to determine the relative scarcity of the set’s ample selection of Rookie Ticket SPs and variations.
It’s a mesmerizing chain of events to be sure, and one that explains, for instance, how a base Rookie Ticket SP of Detroit Lions receiver Corey Fuller can sell for a staggering $290.85 one day while his Variation SSP sells for a whopping $350 just three days later. Indeed, it didn’t take savvy researchers long to figure out just how short Fuller’s super-short-printed variation RC is.
To help provide a a little insight into the SP/SSP craze surrounding 2013 Contenders Football, below is the first of what promises to be many 2013 Contenders Football SP lists. This one is by no means complete, but it does provide a tip-of-the-iceberg illustration of Contenders’ scarcest Rookie Tickets and RC variations. The following list is broken into SPs (cards with quantities of 200 or less) and SSPs (cards with quantities of 50 or less).
Oh, and if you’re looking for a surefire visual tell-tale to differentiate the base Rookie Tickets from the variations, you can find it on the backs of the cards (check out the image below). The base versions include stars around each player’s card-back NFL helmet. The variations do not.
Now, let’s get to the SPs and SSPs:

Cool-thanks for the list. Always good to find these out!
LOL! somebody tell Panini Sam Montgomery got kicked off the team. Only Texan rookie in the group?!
what group? Texans? it’s loaded with them!!
they have a good group, just no lead singer
Fantastic, keep em coming!!
I have a Jaron Brown card #194 and I don’t see it listed as SP or SSP how come??
I just need to know why the Jaron Brown card doesn’t have the stars on the back but it’s not listed as an SP or SSP.
That means you have a variation that has a quantity of more than 200 copies.
Thanks Tracy
When will exact numbers be released?
If I can get my hands on them, I will post them here.
Would love to see the actual numbers tracy. This is gona stall up a lot of people looking to set collect or flip n reinvest as people will be holding their cards longer hoping they are on the lowends of the sp/ssp spectrum.
Awesome product love the look of the base autos and their parallels again this year. Hopefully we can get some actual numbers soon. I have a tyran mathieu base waiting for a new home that will hopefully get me a few new richard shermans!
Any word on numbers for the Variation Rookie Ticket SSPs?
Has Panini forgot to reveal the actual sp and ssp numbers?
So is the rookie ticket or the rookie ticket variation considered the true rookie card??
I have a Zach Sudfeld Playoff Ticket Variation but dont see it on the list
Playoff Tickets are always to #/99 regardless if its the regular version or the variation. These numbers just apply to the Rookie Tickets.
No offense, but I can’t believe Panini would do this to team collectors. Making 3 of the 4 Ravens in the set SP or SSP is ridiculous.
But we?d bet on his success in Oakland.
I love this product and have every base rookie ticket auto since 2005. I liked the idea of 1-2 SSP mixed in but 9 of them is a bit too much. This will cost us set builders $3,000 + for 9 cards of non star players. Spending $5,000+ to build this set of a bad rookie class, not sure it makes much sense…….
I seriously need some of these. I always like searching for the Sps!
Hey Tracy are there any more updates to the SP list? Do you have a print run for the Contenders Rookie Premiere autographed insert cards? Anymore help would be appreciated, thanks.
I hope to have more SP information to post next week. Sorry for the delay.
Cool, will be looking for it.(really curious to see the print run of the Rookie Premiere Auto’s)
Where’s the list??????????????
Tracy is there going to be any black golden tickets?
Any word on the next list???
Any word on when the list will be out? Got the Mathieu and Cyprien variation SSPs that I’m holding until the print is released…
Another day still no list????
It’s now the 11th nearly 2 weeks since you said the rest of this list would get posted . Can we please get the list .
WOW not even gonna post my message i said nothing wrong in it . I asked when the list was going to be posted since you said nearly 2 weeks ago it would get posted.
As soon as I get the list I will post it.
How does nobody know the numbers on these, yet? Beckett knew which ones were to be tagged an SP weeks ago, also has Conner Vernon tagged an SP,but he’s not on the above list.So obviously someone has the full list somewhere. Not sure what’s so hard about it.Just can’t see how Beckett can have the full SP list weeks ago,but nobody can find a computer file or piece of paper showing how many of each were packed out.
I have a Latavius Murray RC auto that’s #66/99 that has no stars, but see other #/99 online that have stars! I also purchased a photo variation that has no stars, but see others on line that have stars! Which ones are SSP ?
mike the no stars is the variation and the sp. /99 is the playoff ticket
so, is the photo variation the ssp or is the photo variation with no stars the ssp ? Which one is the one with a print run of 50 or less ? I realize that the #/99 is the playoff ticket, but there are 2 versions of this, one with stars & one without ! Which one of these is considered a ssp ?
the one with no stars is the ssp..look above on the article it explains it better for you.
Thanks! Can’t wait until there are actual numbers of print runs listed! Hope Panini doesn’t wait 2 years to do this! May not want to purchase a product that won’t reveal numbers for that long! Don’t want to start building a set only to find out that I can’t afford it! Some of us have real lives and everyday bills to pay and can’t afford to go bankrupt on a hobby we enjoy! Better to quit altogether than get sucked into something that we can no longer afford!
yeah im trying hard to get a couple of sets but i only have 4 of the 8 ssp base ones, few on ebay but the sellers want like 800 dollars for guys ive never heard of, really need those print runs so i know what im dealing with, looks like tyrann is gonna be tough to get!
I Have Some Ssp’s and SP’S Will Sell Some SP’S But Some SSP’Are Hard To Tell How Many OfEach Produced. I Have Printing Plate Variation Auto’s . I Have Seen About 10 Cases Opened 120 Boxes And Have a Only Seen A Few SSP’s there Will Be 3 Or 4 Short Prints This a Year Unfortunately.
am i not understanding? /99rc are rookie gold tickets.how can stars and no stars, make a differance when they are verified shortprinted to the same # ? Just like the cracked ice these should both worth way more than any base print that you have to go by the #s they tell you when they feel like it.
on the playoff tickets /99 and cracked ices /21 the stars do not matter, the stars only matter on the rookie tickets. its either a variation or a base. were waiting to see how many of each are made. your correct anycard that has more than 21 copies should be according to common sense should be worth less than a cracked ice, but the ones that are less than 21 should have a good value depending on the player of course.
got ya chris thanks,i thought sp run was 200, and ssp 50. they can be much lower. very interesting now you got me on band wagon to keep checking in good luck
What do you all do with the back printing plates? I know most people don’t care for plates but I am a true collector who collects everything. The back of cards have pic and bio.
By the back, I do mean the printing plates for the back of the regular cards plates. Just wanted to clear that up a little.
Hmmm . . . good question. I’m assuming they hit the recycle bin, but I’ll look into that.
Hmmm . . . good question. I’m pretty sure they hit the recycle bin, but I’ll look into that.
tracy get on them im going broke buying these so called ssp!! lol.. need that list so i can stop the bleeding!!
It is now March. Why no print run numbers. This is not acceptable
exactly 2 more new products have come out now and people are losing intrest! this took way to long!! thumbs down!!
If a variation is short printed to 50 or less then does that mean the regular version is short also?! hmmm
Jake, no not neccasarily…If you look on the above lists, its mentions SP’s and SSP’s for non variant cards…Just because the variation is SP or SSP (50 or less or 200or less) that does NOT mean the regular version is. Sorry.
how about sp ssp for the cards 200 and over? where can we get those?
Anyone know what the deal is with some of the playoff ticket rc auto’s that don’t have numbering on them? I have a Kenny Stills that doesn’t have the /99 on the front of the card. Just a mistake or something more?
come on guys its the middle of march and still no print runs? is the rumor true u lost the print runs?
It’s sad isn’t it.
Beckett will probably beat them to the punch. LOL
Is it ever going to happen?
people have paid thousands for these cards and im one of them and still no print run.WOW.Im sick.Go ahead and say give them a break.people they had the break,i dont recall any of us getting any break.Oh yeah, you get a break,a box break you paid big money for.
im guessing that the numbers will be out any hour now.
there out on another site!! oh wait april fools!!
Can’t believe they still dont have the count on the ssp
I have been looking for 2013 contenders barkevious mingo regular not the variation and I have just seen about maybe 5 of them 2013 till now that is 5-28-17 so I can’t see the mingo regular rc auto print run being 110 of them I might be wrong but I’m betting I’m not I think mingo is one if the SSP
And about the print run on the 2013 contenders dual rc auto of Christine Michael that is autoed on both sides of his card.there are just two cards like that his and knile Davis can someone help me on this panini
