Panini America Teases Base-Set Variations for 2011-12 Past & Present Basketball

April 30, 2012

Add this to the list of throwback thrills slated to permeate 2011-12 Past & Present Basketball when it releases on May 16: Short-printed base-set variations — sure to be among the most sought after nuances in Panini America’s masterful mashup of old-school design elements and modern printing technologies.

In all, 50 players on the Past & Present checklist will be represented with base-set variation SPs, a generation-spanning selection of today’s hottest superstars and yesterday’s greatest legends. We offer a scene-setting sneak peak of just some of those SPs (fronts and backs) in the gallery that follows.

Oh, and just in case you missed our revealing weekend coverage of 2011-12 Past & Present Basketball, you can access those galleries by clicking the links below:

These have a very nice late 70’s, disco-esque feel to them. Excellent job honoring the roots of the hobby with this subset! Thanks as always Tracy!

Okay, I think that’s enough of the old school designs. The inserts look nice, though. Hoping for Prestige or R&S w/ 11-12 rookies in it…we’re into the playoffs already & still no 11-12 RC’s.

No rookies until there are redemptions in Limited (I think?) for this year’s and next year’s rookies….

Actually, the dual rookie redemptions will make their first appearance in 2011-12 Past & Present, with the 2011-12s being autographed redemptions.

Look nice. I didn’t look through all of them but on the Duncan on the back it says “former tennage champion.” Is this a typo? Was teenage meant?

You guys must have your Afro’s on! Loving the disco 70’s feel this set has. Brings back the great memories of a 90s set and insert sets. Great job with your NBA products this year!

Lots of interesting and great looking inserts have been previewed and I applaud Panini for their artistic endeavors. However, not having any rookie cards available prior to the playoffs is just plain unforgiveable and I certainly have no time or interest to play the redemption game right now. The quicker we can turn the page on 2011-12 the better.

I have to agree with Scott Edblom. I really like the looks of the Raining 3’s inserts. Great job on those.

However, without RC autos in either Hoops or Preferred, Panini has had to find lots of obscure players to “fill the autograph quotas/needs” of these two products. In my opinion, the sense of value for either product is just not there for most of the boxes I have busted. When you’re filling auto quotas every retired player who’ll sign and 278 active players, good cards are very few and far between. Even decent cards are tough to get. Many of the retired players in the auto roster of Preferred were great players in their time but virtually “valueless” in the hobby. So when you’re paying roughly $50 per card as in Preferred, it’s tough to feel as though you’re not being taken advantage of.

With redemptions for 12-13 rookies coming in this year’s products, will there still be auto’d RCs next year?

Great set design but the fact that there are no rookie cards in the product (or any for 2011-12) is a turn-off for me. Redemptions won’t be considered their true rookie cards either. It especially sucks knowing that these redemption cards will expire in a year or two and no one will want to buy this on the secondary market after the fact.
