Panini America Addresses Printing Error on Past & Present Draft Class Redemptions
Due to an unfortunate printing error, the 2012 Draft Class Redemption cards from 2011-12 Past & Present Basketball included autograph authentication copy on the back – understandably leading many collectors receiving them recently to believe that those cards were indeed supposed to be autographed. They were not. We apologize for any confusion this error has created.
Ever since we introduced the 2011-12 NBA Draft Class Redemption program more than a year ago, we’ve been consistent both in our communication, and on the redemption cards themselves, that cards featuring members of the 2011 draft class were going to be autographed while cards featuring members of the 2012 draft class were not.
Below, you’ll find images of the fronts and backs of the 2011 and 2012 Draft Class Redemption cards from 2011-12 Past & Present Basketball that detail the differences between the two. We’ve also attached a copy of the hobby-shop poster we created early last summer to illustrate the details of the Draft Class Redemption program.

So I should be glad to have gotten a 11-12 one then? Those are autographed right? And any idea when they will be shipped?

I do have one concern, what about the shady people who will get these cards autographed or sign fake autos themselves? A lot of people were confused with which year rookie class were autographed and which were not. I know you just cleared that up but any thoughts on what’s going to happen to the people who miss this blog post and spend a lot of money on a fake auto? I’m just trying to look out for yall at Panini cause I could see where an individual could get really upset thinking it was a legit auto but got scammed. I’m not upset though I didn’t want yall to think I was or anything. Although it did take away a lot from the card and collecting the whole year rookie class 😦 Oh well. We all make mistakes. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? The details on the cards for the 2012 draft card should include text to say it is not auto. Without seeing both draft class card u wouldn’t know the difference. There is a non communicated expectation that redemption cards mean that the card is either auto’ed or includes a memorabilia.
this is total crap, i wouldnt of even been buying this product. this is a major error on your part and you guys should take care of it the way things were advertised and put into the product. now i wish i can go back and return the multiple cases of this i have purchased
They should have never been redemptions if they weren’t going to have autos…redemptions for base ??
This whole draft idea was a mistake from the beginning. All the hoopla and “added value for collectors” has turned into people paying $100 a pack for base “rookie” cards.
I knew all along how the autograph/non auto versions were being handled, However, very strange and disappointing that 95% of these cards have not been produced, much less signed, or returned or ready to be sent to collectors.
Panini can not back out of this one, there is no disclaimer that states – we will overhype these redemptions, then underdeliver, and on top of it, you have to wait until 2014 to get a 2011 rookie card, is this MLB?
The right thing to do here would be to get the cards signed. I understand that this has a cost and effort impact but it is the right thing to do. It’s a strong assumption that the collector would know where to go to find the intended information about these cards when the card that they have acquired clearly states that they will be getting an autographed card. Furthermore, collectors buying these cards on the secondary market were also deceived by this error, making a purchase they otherwise may not have, and spending more money than they would have had they been fully aware of the intent. Simply saying “we apologize for the error” is not good enough.
I seen someone go off on youtube about this. The redemption card states if the card will be autograph/auto or just a draft pick. People don’t read correctly. They don’t understand that you have to have a draft, than assign a player to the card. They also understand that not all remption cards are autographed. 10 years ago, another company had a similar redemption program with XRC’s and no one put up a fuss. Panini does it, and people want the company to shut down. Read collectors READ!
This stuff was pretty clear from the get go. All it was was a printing error. That shouldn’t make people think they were getting anything else. They knew when they redeemed the card whether it was the XRC or Auto.
Why doesn’t Panini just reprint the base, non-auto cards without the error? I know I rolled my eyes when I saw the autograph certification text box saying ohhh no this again?
How much effort would go into removing that piece of the design on the back and sending the cards for reprint? The cards are just normal 35pt stock with no auto or jersey, seriously, how much would that cost for this relatively limited print run?
Why not do some what would be impressive and unprecedented goodwill for your customers?
The money has already been made by Panini and there is NO REASON for them to try and appease us collectors. For the record, I redeemed around 75 of both the auto and non auto versions, with almost a Grand in these cards, I am definitely vested into these cards.
That being said, I love your idea, agree with it 100% and wish your suggestion would be considered.
Panini has been releasing some great products, with their NFL license, there is basically no competition in that sport, so why change anything?
Any updates on limited redemptions? Still waiting on my kyrie…..:(
Have the 2011 limiteds been signed though? The ones that were supposed to be signed
They’re to the players and are in the process of being signed.
What month would be the earliest for them to be shipped out?
We’ll ship them out as soon as we get them back.
