Panini Peek: 2013-14 Select Hockey

September 14, 2013

2013-14 Select Hockey Main

After more than 20 years on ice, a once and future NHL trading card juggernaut is on the verge of a historic comeback. Select Hockey is back. At least it will be in early November, when Panini America officials release a new-generation version of the venerable favorite that delivers the company’s stunning Optichrome technology in myriad mystical forms.

Each hobby-exclusive box of 2013-14 Select Hockey will be packaged as two mini boxes, each delivering two autographs, two Prizm parallels and three inserts from a historic roster that features Select Stars, Youth Explosion and more. That means each two-mini-box master box will pack four autographs, four Prizms and six additional inserts.

2013-14 Select Hockey will be bolstered by two unique Rookie Card designs from Panini America’s historic Double Rookie Class — including autograph and autograph memorabilia versions — and seven different insert sets honoring the league’s greatest stars from the yesterday, today and tomorrow.

We’ll have plenty more to preview on 2013-14 Select Hockey right here on The Knight’s Lance in the coming weeks. But today, sit back and enjoy this extended first look at the product.

I don’t collect Hockey, but I must say… Panini’s creative team has breathed new life into a component of the hobby that had grown long in the tooth and cookie-cutter in nature. The Huberdeau auto patch is gorgeous and I have nothing but props’ for Panini’s creative team, as the releases this year have been just… Wow.

    Tracy,
I love that Gally is the cover boy for the product. Will the new rookies that debut this year be in this product or will this mainly have the rookies from year? Would MacKinnon be in this one if he debuts on opening night for the Avalanche?
Thanks and this product looks awesome.
    Great work
    T

People are excited about this? Since when is Select a renowned brand in hockey? I can only see this going the way of Zenith and Elite (i.e. nice looking sets that were poorly received).

Furthermore, I think making another chrome-type product will detract from the uniqueness of Prizm and adding even more auto patch rookies will dilute the value of the ones in Crown Royale, Prime, Dominion, etc.

Fewer high quality products (Prime, Score, Titanium) >>>>> a plethora of mediocre products.

I have to agree. While these cards look nice, Select was never a popular brand in the hobby. Prizm is a great idea but by adding chrome parallels to more and more products you’re making that brand irrelevant

Sometimes, simple is best. When something becomes popular, there’s no need for overkill
