Massive Gallery & Must-See Video: Quality Controlling 2010-11 Classics Basketball

March 31, 2011

The power trio of Mike Payne, David Porter and Aik TongtharadolPanini America’s juggernaut NBA product development team — hit the road early Thursday morning for a sweet sojourn to the printing facility to quality control 2010-11 Classics Basketball.

In true voyeuristic fashion, I followed closely behind with cameras in hand to document part of the process.

As you’ll discover in the images and video footage that follows, this year’s Classics has real potential to become an instant hobby classic, what with its striking new designs, its seamless melding of stars from yesterday, today and tomorrow and its refreshingly abundant supply of on-card autographs.

After you’ve feasted on the revealing imagery, be sure to check out the short video clip that follows. When you’ve done all of that, please comment with your initial thoughts on the product, which releases April 13.

And now . . . the must-see video:

Next Wednesday? April 6 instead of 13? Cause I don’t wanna be late for these bad boys!

Good call, Jeff. My bad. It starts shipping next week and should be completely live by April 13.

“refreshingly abundant supply of on-card autographs”

That’s why I love Panini. Best manufacturer in the biz!

Will we be able to get a Derrick Favors RC in Jazz Uni?

    • March 31, 2011 3:19 pm

Not in Classics. On-card autos demand that the cards be printed way in advance to facilitate what is a very time-intensive process.

Any chance we see any Cavaliers rookies or autos in products this year?

    -Manny Harris
    -Christian Eyenga
    -Samardo Samuels
    -Semih Erden

    • March 31, 2011 4:47 pm

Here’s the response to your question from David Porter, one of our NBA brand managers:

“Manny Harris is scheduled for National Treasures and Semih Erden will appear twice — once in Season Update and also in National Treasures. We have no plans for Samardo Samuels or Christian Eyenga at this time.”

      Hope this helps.

Love how the colors blend with the player on the card . You guys are one reason I started collecting again after college . My daughter always ask me to open cards with her . Thanks for putting so much work into your products .

These look really good. Then again, everything that Panini puts out that’s on plain stock ends up looking pretty a’ight.

  9. March 31, 2011 5:47 pm

    Great looking designs.

  10. March 31, 2011 6:34 pm

Wow these are a nice looking card, they are not too “busy” everything is spread out nicely with a decent amount of room for signatures and some nice coloring. Any idea what price range we are looking at? This is one product i may save up and get a case of in a few months. Mind you If I don’t pull a Harangody auto there will be repercussions :D.

This is perhaps the best looking product (any sport and price level) that you have produced this year. Would there be any chance this design and on-card autograph concept will be used for Football and/or Hockey also?

    Keep up the great work.

    • March 31, 2011 7:33 pm

Man, I sure hope we carry those elements over to other sports. Thanks for the kind words. Glad to hear you like it.

Nice Product! Will there be a Rasheed Wallace Card in this Series? Or in the upcoming Series?

That Artis Gilmore card is the best looking of the bunch, love the ABA photos. Much nicer to see him in a Colonels Jersey than a Spurs one later in his career. Will we be seeing more ABA photos being used?

The rookie signature cards are beautiful, very nice clean design, well done. I am going to say best RC autos of the year.

by any chance do you know if the landry fields autos r redemptions or on card and out now?

  19. April 2, 2011 7:13 pm

I’ll say it once again. 2010 Panini Classics was one of the most underrated products and it looks like this year’s version will be a winner. Love the colors, on-card auto’s, legends and rc’s.

I’m drooling over the Fields and LJ “Grand Ma Ma” auto’s. Good stuff!!!

Great job T-hack always bringing the inside scooop. I have to say I really like the Job Panin has done with the Core Brands from Donr/playoff .I like Classics and this is a nice change has a good feel to it. The on-card auto’s always SWEET.
Any chances of a cut Chamberlain auto in future Classics product or is that something that Panini would only put in Treasures given the cost involved. One thing I would like to see is say the Old school auto’s with nice color patches bigger than thumb-nail. jus saying…….
    thanks again

I really like the old design of last year better, they looked liked more of a high end product these look like a 70’s card, But if they are going for an old school look, they got one. The patch cards look way to small something I would excpect from a retail pack not a hobby hit. But having the on card autos is nice to hear.
