Panini America Provides Detailed First Look at 2014-15 Threads Basketball (Gallery)

February 26, 2015

Panini America 2014-15 Threads Basketball Leather Rookies (13)

Early next month, Panini America will put the finishing touches on 2014-15 Threads Basketball and begin shipping the company’s second Target-exclusive NBA trading card product of the season, marking the popular brand’s first appearance on the market since the 2012-13 season.

Much like 2014-15 Prestige Basketball, the first of three planned 2014-15 Target-exclusive NBA products that dropped in October, 2014-15 Threads Basketball will arrive in stores sporting three unique SKUs (Premium boxes carry a $120 SRP, Blaster boxes carry a $30 SRP and Gravity packs carry a $4 SRP). We’ll explore all three configurations in more detail after the jump — and provide a few sneak-peek images, too.

But before we get to the nuts and bolts of 2014-15 Threads Basketball, it’s probably worth showing you this little piece of NBA trading card history we Tweeted out earlier today:

We’ll have more on the sublime Voices of the Game insert below. But for now, we’ll explore some of the highlights of 2014-15 Threads Basketball . . .

  • Team Threads Rookies (card #’s 201-240) fall in all SKUs.
  • Look for Blaster- and Gravity-exclusive Rookie Signage cards featuring autographs of Jabari Parker, Andrew Wiggins, Aaron Gordon and all the top draft picks from the 2014-15 NBA Draft class.
  • Premium boxes feature two autographs and two memorabilia cards per box; also look for Premium-exclusive Leather Rookie Cards (card #’s 241-285).
  • Each Blaster box features one Rookie Memorabilia card and at least two Blaster-exclusive Wood Rookie Cards (card #’s 331-375).
  • Gravity feed packs deliver SKU-exclusive Micro-Etch Rookie Cards (card #’s 286-330).
  • The spectacular Voices of the Game Autographs feature legendary basketball announcers such as Dick Vitale, Bob Knight, Doug Collins and the first certified autographs of the aforementioned Ernie Johnson and Craig Sager.
  • View Autographs and Rookie View Autographs feature autographs signed on plastic and clear acetate pieces to help create some of the most innovative designs of the season.
  • Chase Century Stars, a super-short-printed insert showcasing 20 of the game’s most collectible players and falling roughly once per Premium case.

Stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance for continued coverage of 2014-15 Threads Basketball. Until then, though, check out this extended sneak peek at the set’s Leather Rookie Cards, Wood Rookie Cards and High Flyers and ABA Legends inserts.

I like the look of the cards- LOVE the EJ and Sager cards, without even seeing them- hope Marv Albert is included in the checklist as well- and the ABA cards look great. But I don’t love the packaging format. Will the cards be different at the different price points, like Prestige, or will they be the same cards with different incentives (and by incentives, I mean relics, autographs, parallels, etc)? I hope the ABA set includes some of the players who were in the ABA pre-1971-72. That era of the ABA is totally devoid of trading cards- several of the teams have nothing at all, not a single card, not to mention most of the players.

Good question. I will endeavor to find answers.

I COMPLETELY agree with you. I wish Panini would put together an ABA product with
more than just the ABA players who wound up in the NBA. Complete with pulsar look,
insert sets, cool afros, school yard legends, etc. Willie Wise, Fly Williams, Wendall Ladner,
Zelmo Beatty, Mack Calvin, Goose Ligeon, John Brisker, Marvin Barnes, Bob Netolicky, etc.
Put it together and get some autos on who is left while you still can!!!!!!!

Love seeing the ABA subset. Disappointed that the $60 option that you had for Prestige went away. Is $30 starting to be the standard Blaster box price or is just for these Target exclusives?

Good question, Scott. Not sure right now but will check with our sales folks.

Hey, I actually found both blaster boxes and gravity feed packs of this product at a Fred Meyer. Wondering what that’s about…
