Panini America Begins Writing Masterpiece for 2013 Playbook Football (Sneak Peek)

July 9, 2013

2013 Playbook Football Main

Panini America officials are doing more than just penning a new chapter for the next edition of Playbook Football; they’re essentially writing a whole new volume. And when 2013 Playbook Football releases in early October, it promises to meld the best parts of the first two launches (2011 and 2012) with some completely new plot twists sure to have football collectors salivating.

Already one of the most unique NFL trading card products on the market, Playbook will continue pushing the creative envelope in 2013 by delivering, for the first time, veteran autographed memorabilia booklets, stunning one-of-one Flywire Booklets, Playbook Coaches Signature Booklets honoring the game’s most legendary coaches, and booklets featuring the favorite plays of top 2013 rookies hand-sketched and autographed by the rookies themselves.

But perhaps the most intriguing new addition to the Playbook franchise involves the product taking a decidedly dirty turn — think “Fifty Shades of Grass Stains” or “The Great Unwashed” — by incorporating the most fabulously filthy jumbo game-worn swatches imaginable for the Down & Dirty Booklets.

Add it all up and you’ve got the makings of another bona fide best-seller for the all-hit product that promises four autograph or memorabilia cards in every four-card pack (two booklet cards, at least one autographed version, one additional autograph and one other hit).

2013 Playbook Football’s table of compelling contents reads something like this:

  • Rookies Booklet Signatures: Booklet Rookie Cards of the 40 players who attended the 2013 NFLPA Rookie Premiere featuring player die-cuts along with two memorabilia swatches and an autograph.
  • Playbook Booklet Signatures: Autographed booklets from current NFL stars highlighted by one-of-one autographed printing plate, NFL Shield and Nike Swoosh versions.
  • Down & Dirty Booklets: Featuring unwashed game-worn jerseys fresh from the field in all of their gritty glory; dirt-stained, grass-stained and outrageously good.
  • Flywire Booklets: Rare one-of-one  booklets featuring the NFL Shield and Nike’s Flywire collar taken from the game-worn jerseys of today’s top stars.
  • Playbook Coaches Signature Booklets: Unique booklet cards featuring signatures from some of the most influential coaches in NFL history.
  • Rookie-Drawn Play Booklets: Each of the 40 rookies who attended the 2013 NFLPA Rookie Premiere sketched out and signed their own favorite plays that give them the best opportunity to make an impact in the game.
  • Base Signatures: Look for Gold versions, Green versions and Black versions sequentially numbered to 10 or less.

We’ll have much more on 2013 Playbook Football right here on The Knight’s Lance as the story unfolds. But until then, enjoy this extended first look at the product.

THESE ARE AMAZING. This set is going to be one of the hottest products of the year. Veteran game-used booklets, veteran booklet patch autos, FLYWIRE GAME-USED jersey cards. Unreal. I tip my cap to you, Panini Team.

    Tracy,
Just when you think you guys can’t make this product any better, that Geno Smith is really awesome. Will there veteran players (like Tannehill) have a playbook design card?
    Thanks,
    T

Love the look of the product, very strong profile. Having Kaepernick as the cover-boy is a bold stroke.
    Nicely done, Panini N.A.

The Flywire relic cards are quite cool and the Rookie Drawn Play booklets are awsome, the drawn out play from the player makes it more personal than a autograph.

Pretty excellent gallery there Tracy, the actual play diagram is a good new twist instead of just a straight autograph. Thanks!

    Hey Tracy,

Wow! That Adrian Peterson card is incredible! And the Geno Smith card is very clever as well. One of these years I am hoping to be able to bust a box of this product. This looks like a great year to start.

Looks like I’m going to be going broke getting booklets of Lacy or Franklin (if Franklin is going to get booklets)…. Of all the times for the Packers draft guys that are going to have some great cards, it has to be when I’m trying to pay some debt off… So far, between Prestige and Elite, I’m not making any progress 😦 It appears that when Playbook comes out, I’ll be dropping some money on getting some of those booklets…

    • July 10, 2013 9:28 am

We understand and appreciate your plight; and we also appreciate your support. And for the record, both Lacy and Franklin will have booklets.

Awesome! Can’t wait to see them! I’m not too worried about it, though, I’m still trying to get used to doing and sticking to a budget, so it will work itself out 🙂

I bet pack searchers will find an interesting way to “sniff” out those Dirty books. You may want to consider pine-tree-scented air freshener decoys.

The Flywire books look incredible, and I love the Rookie Drawn XO’s books.

I can tell the components of this product were talked about at great length. I hope this creativity percolates to future products. Keep it up!

Love both the Down and Dirty concept (I thought you had something like that in mind when you had a blog post about those dirty RG III game worn jerseys last fall) as well as the flywire ones!!

  25. July 12, 2013 1:12 pm

Flywire cards look pretty cool! What about the teams that didn’t adopt that and still have regular collars like the Packers? Any chance we will still see a similarly designed card featuring collars? Could call it “Blue Collar Materials” or something like that!

Any possible hints on players that may be in the Down & Dirty subset other than A.P.? And any idea on a coach or two in the Signature set? Thanks!
