Exclusive: NBA Star Blake Griffin Discusses Panini HRX, the First Video Trading Card

April 11, 2011

Panini America officials revealed earlier today California-based Recom Group as the exclusive technology partner for the pioneering Panini HRX, the industry’s first video trading card.

Now, exclusively on The Knight’s Lance, we’re going to reveal a little bit more.

Rather than have us talk about how many prototypes we went through to get to this very moment when exclusive content and highlights of your favorite athletes are featured on a trading card (by the way, our first evolution/prototype for Panini HRX looks very similar to something else I saw recently), we thought we’d share what Panini’s very own Highlight Reel, Blake Griffin, thinks of the revolutionary HRX.

“That’s awesome . . . it’s groundbreaking,” Griffin said as he watched his own Panini HRX video trading card for the first time last Thursday in the office of Panini America CEO Mark Warsop. “It’s unbelievable, man. It’s crazy. You never think something like that is going to happen and then to actually see it . . . it’s going to be game-changing.”

To be sure, this is no “concept.” It’s Panini HRX — and it’s revolutionary. It will take the trading card category to new heights by providing up to 30 minutes of HD-quality video content. It will also bring collectors and sports fans in basketball, football, hockey and every other sport Panini has a presence in their very own Highlight Reel Xperience, beginning with limited Panini HRX autographed versions of Blake Griffin, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and John Wall inserted into 2010-11 Totally Certified Basketball (or should we call it “Totally Licensed?”).

So, without further ado, we present this exclusive video featuring the incomparable Griffin discussing the incomparable Panini HRX. How’s that for a dream team?

Wow, actually seeing it helps get a grasp on what it’s all about. I am very curious to see them when they hit the street. I wonder what the first few will sell for, I am guessing a pretty hefty sum.

There will be exactly 50 of each players’ video card in the whole world.
Good luck ever seeing one in the wild.

WOW!!!! Truely ground breaking. I do really like the fact of the video of the player signing the same card of the video card that you pull. I hope i’m one of the lucky one’s to pull one. Just sweet.

I love Blake Griffin, he is such a dichotomy. On the court he is a force of nature, off the court he is such a low key dude.

When can we expect these to end up in products? And please bring this to your hockey line. Please 🙂

That is the plan, good sir. The first Panini HRX cards will release in June inside 2010-11 Totally Certified Basketball. Like you, we can’t wait.

Any idea when and what product the video cards come out in football?

Watching that vid has made a lot of things clearer about the cards. Blake looks like a nice down to earth guy. All time three point champ deserves one i reckon 😀 .

I was very reluctant when I heard about these, but after seeing these, I am looking forward to them.

Can’t wait to see these in hockey. Just give a shout if you need some suggestions for highlight reel saves by a certain Habs goalie. 🙂
